Half a century of song

The choir’s annual Spring Concert on Saturday 14th May became a particularly special occasion for choir member Roger Powell, who this year is celebrating the 50th anniversary of his joining the choir in February 1966.
During the interval Roger was asked to come forward from his usual place among the tenors. After a short explanatory speech from choir chairman Staveley Ferguson Roger was presented with something unique: a choir uniform jacket with the usual silver coloured buttons and 'WMVC' pocket badge replaced by gold! Roger is immensely proud of his time spent with the choir so this was the perfect gift to mark the occasion!
Roger replied by thanking the choir and committee for arranging such a thoughtful presentation. Since he joined the choir at the age of 26 Roger has served under nine musical directors, made many good friends, and has travelled with the choir to sing in concerts in many places around the world including Prague, Paris, Bruges, Atlanta (USA), Ireland and Germany. He has enjoyed the good company and the travel, but most of all, the singing. He urged all young men who think they might enjoy singing to come along and listen to a rehearsal at St. James’ Parish Centre, Weybridge on a Tuesday evening where they will be made very welcome by the choir and its Musical Director Johnny Kilhams, and could soon be singing in concerts with the choir.
The first photograph shows the Choir Chairman, Staveley Ferguson during the presentation, with Roger still in his old jacket (not the original from 50 years ago though!). The second photograph shows (right to left front row) choir Musical director Johnny Kilhams, Roger in his new jacket, Camilla Jeppeson, friend of the choir and guest singer at the concert; and Mike Wood, the choir's accompanist, all backed by some of Roger's choir colleagues.
