THE RNLI - CELEBRATING 200 YEARS

At our Autumn 24 concert the charity we collected for was the RNLI, and so learnt quite a bit about their operation. Last weekend I went down to Newquay to stay with my son's family and so we went down to the coast on Saturday 5th October to Chapel Porth. It was a fantastic beach with big surf and there were the RNLI keeping watch. I went up to the guys to have a chat and ask about how things were going. They said they had had 3 rescues this year and things were going well. So after walking the beach and admiring the surfers in their wet suits we went back to the headland to have our pasties. While eating our lunch we noticed that one of the surfers on the west side of the coast seemed to be having trouble. A strong current was carrying him onto the rocks and he was struggling to swim back against it. The lifeguard leapt into action and was soon in the sea with his rescue board. We soon lost sight of him as he was pulled round the rocks towards the surfer. After about 5 minutes they both appeared out to sea holding onto the rescue board and gradually making there way back to the shore. A second life guard went in to help, and the surfer was brought out safe and sound. His girl friend was very glad to see him! A full report can be seen on the RNLI website, but it just goes to show that fund raising for all these charities does make a difference.
