Young Conductor Scheme
THE CHOIR
Weybridge Male Voice Choir has been serving local communities for over 100 years. It is a non-audition, community, four-part choir of some 55 voices. It is professionally led and supported by Jonathan Kilhams, Director of Music and Thomas Kelsey, accompanist. Its repertoire is progressive, combining traditional male choral works with pieces drawn from across the century of its existence, and up to the present day.
THE SCHEME
The Scheme is a first for WMVC. It is intended for a young conductor studying, or looking to study, choral conducting. The Scheme will run for an academic year (September to July).
The young conductor will be mentored by Jonathan Kilhams. The successful applicant will be able to develop their skills in practical settings, conducting an amateur choir of mixed ability, which will afford opportunities to address challenges not normally associated when conducting professional musicians. The scheme will provide ideal preparation for advanced formal training elsewhere.
THE DETAIL
The Young Conductor will:
· Attend one weekly rehearsal per month (Tuesdays 8-10 pm).
· Lead warm-ups and conduct selected pieces.
· Sing with the choir during rehearsals, while observing the Director of Music.
· Attend a Music Sub-Committee meeting where decisions are made on future repertoire.
· Attend an Executive Committee meeting (Zoom) to witness the Director of Music’s input and involvement.
· Conduct one piece in concert.
REMUNERATION
An honorarium of £50 per session will be paid and help will be available for travel expenses.
